Christmas Trifle Dessert
Whenever I need something quick that I know will be a a hit, I think of trifle recipes. During the summer I make this fruit trifle often for BBQ’s and this chocolate trifle is so wonderful too!
This holiday trifle is perfect and so pretty for a Christmas party or for after Christmas dinner. It’s not only delicious but so easy to make, thanks to a boxed cake mix and a simple pudding layer.
Ingredients You’ll Need for this Christmas Dessert
Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this recipe. Scroll down to the full recipe card for the specific amounts.
- Red velvet cake – I used a box of Betty Crocker mix but use your favorite brand. You can also use a vanilla cake and add red food coloring to make the red color you’d like. You can also buy any premade store bought cake as well.
- Eggs, water and vegetable oil – The typical ingredients listed on boxed mixes. But be sure to read your box in case it lists something different. I use whole milk or 2% usually but you can use your favorite of dairy free option.
- White Chocolate Pudding Mix – You will use (2) 3.3 ounce boxes of “instant” pudding. Not the cook and serve.
- Cool whip – for mixing with the pudding and for topping the trifle.
- Green food coloring – I like using gel food coloring but you can use liquid as well.
- Christmas sprinkles – For a pretty added topping.
Variations
1. Use a mixture of cake colors. Red and white like an angel food cake or vanilla cake is pretty too.
2. Use a different pudding flavor: Use cheesecake pudding, vanilla pudding or pistachio pudding for a fun twist.
3. Add berries like slices of strawberries or kiwi or mini marshmallows too.
4. Make fresh stabilized whipped cream instead of cool whip if you’d like. Just add a tablespoon or 2 of dry vanilla pudding mix per pint of heavy whipping cream
How to Make this Trifle
Step 1 –Bake the Cake. Make the cake according to the package directions on the box you choose. Let it cool completely after removing it from the oven.
Step 2 – Make the Pudding Layer. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and milk until smooth. Add in half of the cool whip (about 6 ounces) and stir until combined.
Step 3 – Add the green gel food coloring and whisk into the mixture completely. Cover and place in the refrigerator to set while the cake cools.
Step 4 – Cut the cooled cake into any size cubes you’d like.
Step 5 – Assemble the trifle. In a glass trifle bowl, layer half the cake cubes followed by half the pudding mixture. Repeat with another cake layer and then the rest of the pudding.
Step 6: Then, gently spread the remaining cool whip over top. Decorate with Christmas sprinkles.
Tips
Be sure the cake is completely cool before assembling.
Make the trifle up to 24 hours in advance.
How to Store Leftovers
- Refrigerate: Cover the trifle and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing this dessert. I think it’s best enjoyed fresh.
