Homemade Peach Cobbler
If you’re anything like us, we can’t get enough of sweet fresh fruit desserts in the spring and summer months. This old fashioned peach cobbler recipe is so easy to make any time but is even more wonderful during fresh peach season!
With just a few simple ingredients, this delicious cobbler is a a great recipe to serve guests or devour after dinner any night of the week.
Ingredients/shopping list
Peaches – I like to use fresh peaches (about 7 medium ripe peaches). I don’t peel the peaches but you can if you’d like.
White Sugar – Sweetens the fruit and the cobbler topping.
Cinnamon – Pairs perfectly with the peaches and helps to give the cobbler a nice warm spice flavor.
Cornstarch – Is used to thicken the peach filling.
Flour – All-purpose flour is used to create the topping. You can also use gluten free one-to-one flour.
Baking Powder – Helps the cobbler topping to rise into a fluffy texture.
Butter – Use salted or un-salted butter, and make sure to dice it into small cubes.
Milk – For the richest flavor use whole milk for the topping mixture.
Sugar – Turbinado sugar or coarse sugar is going to create a sweet crunch on the top of the cobbler.
Variations/ Substitutions
1. Swap the white sugar with light brown sugar.
2. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the peach cobbler filling for a twist of tart.
3. Add in some sliced strawberries, blueberries or even blackberries with the peaches for a peach and blackberry cobbler.
4. If you do not have fresh fruit, you can use frozen peaches for this southern peach cobbler.
5. You can use this recipe to transform the recipe into any fruit cobbler you would like. Swap the peaches with fresh sliced apples to make an apple cobbler instead. Or fresh blueberries for blueberry cobbler.
6. Use a non-dairy milk if you need a milk-free dessert.
How to Make This Peach Cobbler Recipe

Step 4 – Then work in the cubed butter until it is about pea sized crumbles.
Step 5 – In a small bowl, add the milk and vanilla. Then gradually add the milk mixture into the dry ingredients.
Step 6 – Using a slotted spoon to remove the peaches from their juices, transfer the peach to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Discard the peach juices.
Step 6 – Sprinkle the cobbler topping all over the top of the peaches evenly. Top with the sugar topping.
Step 7 – Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the peach filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
Remove the peach cobbler from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream or eat it plain.
Tips
- Use self-rising flour in place of the baking powder and all-purpose flour in the original recipe.
- Make sure to scoop the flour into the measuring cup with a small spoon, and then level it off with the back of a butter knife. If you use frozen peaches let them thaw first.
- If using canned peaches, drain the juices well and pat the peaches dry with a paper towel as well as possible.
- Use a food processor to mix the flour and cold butter.
- Instead of slicing butter in cubes you can use a cheese grater to shave frozen or cold butter, to create the perfect texture for mixing.
FAQ’s
Store leftover cobbler in the refrigerator in an airtight container or cover with aluminum foil for up to 3-4 days. Can be eaten cold or warmed for a few seconds in the microwave or let sit at room temperature.
You can warm up the peach cobbler in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Or you can cover the cobbler with foil in your baking dish and reheat at 350 degrees. Then reheat for about 10 minutes until it is warmed all the way through. Always place a cold dish into a cold oven and then turn on the heat to avoid the dish cracking.
This is a freezer-friendly dessert! Just make the cobbler, cover with foil and then a layer of plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw the cobbler in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat in the oven to crisp up the topping. Remember to place the cold dish in a cold oven then turn it on.
