My Childhood Favorite Powdered Donuts Made at Home
I vividly remember my mother surprising us with Little Debbie powdered donuts as special treats growing up. Whenever I go to a donut shop, my first choice is always powdered donuts. So naturally, these homemade donuts are always fun to make at home too!
Like these pumpkin donuts and these maple donuts, I choose to bake them rather than fry them to cut down on the calories and it’s much faster too.

Ingredients you’ll need
The complete list of ingredients with amounts are listed in the full recipe card below.
- Milk – Use any milk you like. I like full milk but 2%, skim or even a non-dairy alternative like almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk work as well.
- Vanilla Greek yogurt – Use plain yogurt, canola oil, unsweetened applesauce or softened butter as a substitute.
- Maple syrup – I love the extra flavor this adds but feel free to use brown sugar or honey instead.
- Apple cider vinegar – Reacts with the baking powder to help the donuts rise. White vinegar works too.
- Vanilla extract – Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavor. You can swap it for almond extract for a different flavor.
- All-purpose flour – I use regular all purpose flour. You can use a 1:1 gluten-free flour or oat flour if needed.
- Sugar
- Baking powder – be sure it’s not expired so they rise nice and fluffy.
- Salt
- Powdered sugar – aka confectioners’ sugar is for coating the donuts while still slightly warm.
Variations You Can Make
1. Make them lightly spiced by adding in a ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon or nutmeg into the dry ingredients.
2. Make mini donuts by using a mini donut pan and reduce baking time by 3-4 minutes. This silicone pan is great for these.
How to make Powdered Sugar Donuts (Step-by-Step Instructions)
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350° F and spray a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray (or coat with oil or butter).
Step 2: In a medium bowl, add the milk, yogurt, maple syrup, and apple cider vinegar and vanilla extract and whisk to combine.
Step 3: In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt and toss to blend.
Step 4: Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir. Be careful not to over mix or the donuts will be more dense. The batter will be slightly thick and airy.
Step 5: Pour the donut batter into a large piping bag or a basic plastic zip closure bag, cut the tip off the end and fill each hole about ¾ full. You can also carefully spoon the batter into each hole.
Step 6: Bake for 10-12 minutes. You can tell if they are done if you insert a toothpick into the center of the thickest part and it comes out clean.
Step 7: Remove from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes then remove from the pan and place on a wire cooling rack.
Coat in powdered sugar. While the donuts are still a little warm, add the powdered sugar to a small bowl or shallow plate. Place each donut in the sugar and coat both sides well. Or place the powdered sugar in another plastic bag , add the donuts and shake to coat them.
How to Make Powdered Sugar Stick to Donuts
The sugar sticks best if the donuts are still are little warm. If the powdered sugar isn’t sticking to the donuts, lightly dampen them by brushing with a little melted butter, water, or oil.
How to Make Baked Donuts in a Muffin Tin
If you don’t have a regular donut pan, you can compromise by placing a small rolled up balls of aluminum foil in the center of each hole of a muffin tin and pipe or spoon the batter around the foil ball.
Or simply fill a mini muffin pan about ½ full and make donut hole size instead. They will only need to be cooked for about 8-10 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
How to Store Leftovers
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Or store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The sugar may absorb into the donut. If so, dip them in sugar again.
Freeze: Freeze the donuts uncoated for up to 2 months in a freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator and then coat in the powdered sugar before serving.
