This apple crisp recipe is an ultimate, cozy fall dessert that’s so easy make with a few pantry ingredients.  It’s hard to beat warm, cinnamon spiced apples with the best buttery crisp oat topping.

Our Favorite Easy Homemade Apple Crisp

Nothing screams fall in my house like making apple crisp after picking apples at our local orchard. It’s a family tradition that we look so forward to.

It’s easy to make ahead too. Just assemble it up to a day ahead, cover and refrigerate. Then pop it in the oven and bake until bubbly and crispy! Remember you will need it to bring to room temperature before putting a cold dish in the hot oven! Or simply place the cold dish in the oven and THEN turn it on.

You just can’t beat this warm right out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or a dollop of whipped cream and even a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Best Apples for Making Apple Crisp

The best apples for baking are ones that hold up better to baking like Fuji, Jonagold, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Gala or McIntosh. Avoid softer, sweeter apples like rcortland, ed delicious or golden delicious as they will bake more mushy.

If you like slightly more tart apples, use Granny Smith apples and add a few extra minutes of baking time. Feel free to use a mix of apples too!  A few granny smith with honeycrisp or gala with fuji.

    Ingredients Needed

The complete list of ingredients with amounts are listed in the full recipe card below.

    • Apples – I usually leave the apple peels on but feel free to with a vegetable peeler if you’d like. It is purely a personal choice. Slice them evenly for even baking but not too thin. You can also dice them into chunks.
    • All-purpose flour – You can swap this for gluten free one-to-one flour or oat flour as well.
    • Old-fashioned oats – I think the thick oats makes a much heartier texture.  Quick oats can make the topping a little mushier. Use gluten free needed.
    • Brown sugar and white granulated sugar – I love the mix of both sugars and the caramelized flavor the brown sugar gives it.  Feel free to adjust the sugar or even swap the brown sugar for coconut sugar for a slightly less sweet version.
    • Butter – Use salted or unsalted. I melt it in a bowl in the microwave for 20 seconds.  For a vegan / dariy-free option, you can use plant based butter or coconut oil.
    • Cinnamon – If you want extra fall flavors, add ¼ teaspoon of cloves, allspice or nutmeg.
    • Baking powder

    Variations To Try

    1. Add chopped walnuts or pecans to the topping mixture.
    2. Add raisins in with the apples if desired.

How to Make This Easy Apple Crisp with Oat Topping

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.

Sliced apples and a knife on a wooden cutting board, with whole apples and a bowl of crumb topping nearby.

Step 2: Place the sliced apples in the prepared dish.

A glass bowl containing oats, brown sugar, white sugar, flour, baking powder and salt, and cinnamon with melted butter poured over on a marble surface.

Step 3: Make the crumble topping. In a medium mixing bowl, add all of the other ingredients and mix well until the butter has coated all of the dry ingredients well and there are no dry spot remaining.

Step 4: Sprinkle the flour/oat mixture evenly over top of the sliced apples.

Step 5: Place in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Serve warm plain or top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

    Tip:

Bake uncovered for the crispiest streusel topping.

    Storing Leftovers

Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Mine never lasts that long!

Freeze: Once cooled, cover with plastic wrap first and then a layer of aluminum foil. You can also freeze it before baking. If you do, I would toss the apples in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice before adding the topping to help keep the apples from turning brown.

Reheat:  Place on a microwave safe plate and heat for 20 seconds. I love to reheat mine to give it the out of the oven taste again!
