    Easy Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark

This bark recipe is a perfect combination of crunchy, salty pretzels, chocolate, and luscious caramel. It’s the perfect treat for holidays or for a quick dessert for parties. Check out the variations you can make down below.

Like this classic saltine cracker toffee (aka Christmas crack) or this peppermint bark, it’s great for gifting to friends too. Make them all and put them in a holiday tin or a mason jar with a pretty bow tied around the rim.

Ingredients You’ll Need for this Bark Recipe

The complete list of ingredients with amounts are listed in the full recipe card below.

Ingredients on a marble surface: pretzel twists, vegetable oil, heavy cream, salt, caramel candies, and chocolate chips in glass bowls. Labels indicate each item.
    • Sea salt – I love salted caramel so I always add it.
    • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – You can use milk or dark chocolate chips too. I like to use a quality chocolate like Ghirardelli. I have also used chocolate bars instead of chips
    • Vegetable oil – Helps the chocolate melt smoothly and spread easily. Use any neutral oil like canola or even coconut oil.
    • Mini pretzel twists – You can use pretzel sticks or larger twists too.
    • Caramel candies – I just use little Kraft caramels for the gooey, sweet layer. Don’t forget to unwrap them!
    • Heavy cream – Makes the caramels smooth and pourable.

    Variations

    1. Add Nuts – Sprinkle chopped nuts like peanuts, pecans, almonds, or cashews over the top.
    2. Add candies – like M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces, or holiday sprinkles.
    3. Homemade Caramel Sauce – Make your own caramel by heating a ½ cup of brown sugar and a ½ cup of butter in a pot on the stovetop. Boil it for about 3 minutes until bubbly and it thickens then spoon onto the chocolate layer.

How to Make Chocolate Pretzel Bark Candy

Step 1 – Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

A bowl of melted chocolate with a white spatula, surrounded by pretzels and caramel squares.

Step 2 – In a microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and vegetable oil.  Microwave at 60% power for 30 seconds, stir, and repeat until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Be very careful not to overheat the chocolate or it will become too thick to use. The bowl will get warm enough to continue melting the chocolate after 2 or 3 times.  (you can also use a double boiler to melt the chocolate).

A sheet of parchment paper with a smooth layer of melted chocolate spread evenly across the surface.

Step 3 -Pour ¾ of the melted chocolate onto the lined baking sheet and spread it into a thin, even layer with a spatula.

Step 4 – Place the pretzels evenly over the top of the melted chocolate.

A bowl of caramel sauce with a white spoon on a white surface.

Step 5 – In another microwave-safe bowl, combine the unwrapped caramels and heavy cream. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.

A slab of chocolate bark topped with pretzels and drizzled with caramel sauce on parchment paper.

Step 6 – Drop spoonfuls of the melted caramel over the pretzels and swirl gently with a spoon.

Step 7 – Drop the remaining chocolate by spoonfuls over the caramel and swirl again. Reheat the chocolate briefly if it becomes too thick.

Step 8 -Sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Step 9 – Refrigerate  for 2 hours to chill and set. Break into pieces and enjoy!

    Tips

Don’t Overheat the Chocolate – Stir between heating intervals to avoid the chocolate getting too thick and seizing up.

Chill Completely – Let the bark set fully in the fridge before breaking it into pieces.

    How to Store Leftovers

    • Store the bark in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
    • Freezing: You can freeze pretzel bark for up to 2 months. Wrap pieces in parchment paper and place them in a freezer-safe bag.
