Easy Baked Onions with Balsamic
Baked to perfection with a hint of balsamic vinegar and Italian herbs, these roasted onions have the most wonderful caramelized exterior and a tender, melt-in-your-mouth center. The combination of flavors combined with the onions natural sweetness with roasted make this recipe a favorite every time I make them.
Ingredients Needed:
Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this easy recipe. Scroll down to the full recipe card for individual amounts.
- Yellow onions: Peel the onions before baking them.
- Balsamic vinegar: Use regular or white balsamic vinegar. Other flavored balsamic vinegars are great to use as well.
- Italian seasoning: A classic blend with basil and oregano.
- Salt and pepper
- Butter: I used unsalted but you can use salted as well.
Variations/Substitutions:
- Feel free to use a different type of onion. White onions, sweet onions or even red onions work as well.
- Swap the Italian seasoning for just basil and oregano if you prefer.
- Add a sprinkle of garlic powder to each onion. Rosemary and thyme are also great options.
- For a vegan version, use olive oil or a plant-based butter substitute instead of butter.
- Sprinkle with parmesan cheese the last 5-10 minutes of baking.
What to serve with this Roasted Onion Recipe
These roast onions are excellent to serve along side any favorite sautéd, roasted or grilled chicken, steak, turkey or pork chops.
They are a great compliment to other vegetables side dishes like mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, or and other roasted veggies. You can even add extra veggies right to the same dish during the last 20-35 minutes of baking.
How to Bake Onions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a 9×13 baking dish.
Step 2: Trim the ends off each of the raw onions, and place them in the baking dish.
Step 3: Drizzle about ¼ teaspoon of balsamic vinegar over top of the onions. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
Step 4: Top each onion with a tablespoon of butter.
Step 5: Bake in the preheated oven on the middle rack for 40-45 minutes, until the onions are soft. If they are getting too brown on top, loosely cover the dish with foil.
Serve the onions warm.

- Choose similar sized onions for even cooking.
- Let the onions sit for a few minutes after baking to absorb the juices.
- Cooking time may vary depending on the size of your onions.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

- 8 small yellow onions peeled
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 tablespoons butter unsalted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400° F (200° C)
