My Grandmother’s Favorite Easy Appetizer to Make

This has always been a favorite recipe that my grandmother made every holiday as our appetizer and even as a child I would eat as many as I could get my hands on. To be honest, she only use cream cheese and mayo in hers but I added that ranch seasoning one time and fell in love with the added flavor.  Be sure to check out some other fun variations below as well.

Since it uses such simple ingredients, it’s one of those easy recipes that are the best when you need something super quick to make ahead.

If making in advance, store the sliced celery and cheese filling separately, then assemble the celery sticks just before serving.  If you have leftover cream mixture, it makes a great dip to serve with pretzel sticks or crackers.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

The complete list of ingredients with amounts are listed in the full recipe card below.

A cutting board of ingredients for stuffed celery including chopped celery sticks, a plate of cream cheese, mayonnaise, and ranch seasoning on a white countertop.
    • Celery:  I used 6 celery stalks and cut into about 3-inch pieces. You can make them any size your’d like though. Look for thicker stalks they hold more filling!
    • Cream Cheese: Softened to room temperature. I used regular cream cheese but feel free to use light or plant-based if you prefer.
    • Mayonnaise: Hellman’s is my favorite. Again, you can use light or regular mayo.
    • Ranch Seasoning: I use Hidden Valley Ranch dry dressing mix or Trader Joe’s has a great one in their spice aisle.

    Stuffed Celery Variations

This recipe is a great starting point for adding other flavors. Here are a few delicious ideas to jazz it up even more.

    1. Add ¼ cup diced green or black olives.

    2. Add a ¼ cup of diced cooked and crumbled bacon,  ¼ cup of freshly grated cheddar cheese and a couple of tablespoons of thinly sliced chives.

    3. Swap the ranch for garlic powder, Italian seasoning or Good Season’s dry Italian dressing mix or Everything Bagel seasoning.

    4. Add finely chopped walnuts or pecans.

How To Make Cream Cheese Stuffed Celery

Step 1: Wash and trim your celery, then cut into 3-inch pieces. Pat the sticks dry with a paper towel to help the filling stick.

A glass bowl containing a block of cream cheese, a dollop of mayonnaise, and a pile of ranch seasoning on a white surface.
A glass bowl with cream cheese mixture on a white marble surface.

Step 2: In a bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, mayo, and ranch seasoning until the cheese mixture is smooth.

Stuffed Celery sticks arranged on a plate, each topped with a cream cheese mixture.

Step 3: Spoon the cream cheese mixture into each celery stick to “stuff the celery”.

Step 4: Garnish with a little dried or fresh dill, paprika or black pepper to taste, gives it a nice flavor!

Chill for 30 minutes before serving if desired.

    How To Store Celery Sticks

Place any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.

I don’t recommend freezing the stuffed celery sticks.
