Homemade Chocolate Hummus Dessert Dip
I know people say if it’s too good to be true it usually is, but in the case of this sweet hummus being a delicious AND healthy chocolate dip, it’s absolutely true. It’s similar to a classic savory hummus, but we’re also including cocoa powder, peanut butter, and honey.
Loaded with protein, fiber, and antioxidants and made without refined sugars, it’s hummus that doubles as a naturally gluten free, healthy snack, and no one will ever know it isn’t a brownie dip.
All anyone will know is that they’re getting a mouthful of chocolatey goodness in every bite. It’s the stuff that makes you want to lick the bowl.
Serve it with fresh fruit, berries, cookies, and pretzels at your next party or gathering, and watch how quickly it disappears. Then watch how shocked everyone is when you tell them what’s in it!
Ingredients needed
Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this delicious recipe. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card with amounts.
- Chickpeas: You can use canned chickpeas or 2 cups of chickpeas that have been cooked from dry beans.
- Cocoa powder: Use either natural or Dutch-processed. Since there is no baking involved, it’s all about which flavor you prefer.
- Tahini: Used in classic hummus recipes, it’s a paste made from sesame seeds which adds a nutty flavor and a creamy texture.
- Honey: Use any store-bought honey or raw honey, it’s up to you. Raw honey can sometimes be a bit solid, but it will blend nicely in the food processor. You can add more sweetener if you’d like.
- Peanut butter: All-natural peanut butter is great for this recipe!
- Vanilla extract: For added flavor which enhances the taste of the chocolate.
- Salt: To bring out the flavors.
- Water: Only if needed, it’s used to thin out the chocolate hummus.
- Chopped or shaved dark chocolate: An optional garnish. Semi sweet chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips are great too
Variations/ Substitutions
1. Although not a traditional hummus, this chocolate dip would be great using black beans in place of the garbanzo beans.
2. Use pure maple syrup instead of honey or sweetener of choice for a vegan option.
3. Use a higher cocoa content, 70% or higher. The higher the percentage of cocoa, the lower the sugar content.
4. Substitute the peanut butter with another nut butter like almond butter, cashew butter, or even sunflower seed butter.
How to Make this Dessert Hummus Recipe
This fudgy chocolate hummus is ready in minutes! You’ll never need the store-bought stuff again.
Step 1 – In the bowl of your food processor, plus the chickpeas, cocoa powder, tahini, honey, peanut butter, vanilla, and salt (so, everything).
Step 2 – Mix for 3-4 minutes until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add water if the hummus is too thick.
Step 3 – Adjust the honey, chocolate, or salt as needed. Transfer it to a serving dish, garnish with chocolate shavings, and serve with your favorite dippers.
Tips
- For best results remove any loose chickpea skins. You don’t need to remove all of them, but any that are already hanging loose you can get rid of.
- Use a high-speed blender if you don’t have a food processor. It’ll do the same job.
- Drop in some peppermint extract for a candy cane mint chocolate dip. It’s a great healthy option during the holidays.
- Double the recipe for a big batch. Trust me, it goes quickly.
- Serve with fresh strawberries, apple slices, graham crackers, and pretzels.
How to Store Leftovers?
Refrigerate: Store leftover hummus in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freeze: You can freeze hummus in freezer bags or containers for up to a 2 months. Give a good stir after thawing the refrigerator.
FAQ’s
Heaven on a spoon? No, but really, it tastes like brownie batter. The chickpea flavor is masked by the chocolate flavors, peanut butter, and honey, so it truly is a delicious dip that just happens to also be a healthy chocolate hummus.
It’s spectacular on top of pancakes, waffles, or inside crepes! You could also spread it over toast as a healthy alternative to Nutella. Then, top with some hemp hearts, chia seeds, flax seeds, or sliced fruit.
