Homemade Taco Seasoning
After looking at the ingredients of store-bought taco seasoning packets, which has several not so good ingredients, I decided it was time to figure out how to make my own DIY taco seasoning.
Making this taco seasoning takes less than 5 minutes and it the best to use for tacos, burritos, dips and more! Believe me, once you make this recipe you will never go back to buying the packets.
I didn’t include any salt in this recipe but feel free to add a teaspoon if you prefer. Not only does it not have any artificial ingredients, it’s also naturally gluten-free as well.
How to Make this Homemade Seasoning
Mix all the spice ingredients together and store in an airtight container. (I actually use an old spice bottle that I had saved)
This recipe is not too spicy. If you like it a little spicer, add a tad more cayenne pepper.
Use 2 tablespoons of the mixture with 1 pound of ground meat or shredded chicken. You can add

We made this tonight & it is awesome!
Amanda
Do you need to add water with this seasoning?
Sherri
You don’t have to but I sometimes add a few tablespoons to help mix it in the meat. 🙂
Linda Renslear
Very good, thanks.

We are just finishing using up our first batch. It is a great recipe. We are going to remake it and don’t expect to ever buy a package at the grocery again. Thank you!
Sherri

After running all over Southern California chasing down gluten-free taco seasoning mix only to get to the location recommended by the manufactures website to find they were out of stock, I finally decided to make my own. Wow! This recipe was just what the doctor ordered! Now I can’t figure out why anyone would by store-bought taco seasoning again????!!!!
Sherri
I’m so happy to hear this! I feel the same! I never knew it was so easy.
Sheila
Thank you! So much better than packaged seasoning, and healthier also.
Janet
This taco seasoning is so much better than the packets in the stores. I’m impressed!

This taco seasoning recipe is fantastic and easy to make. It tastes so much better than the store bought seasoning mix which I will never buy again. I make this in big batches because I use it in other dishes too; a little goes a long way. I highly recommend this recipe.

This recipe is so easy to make. There is no reason to buy the packaged mix. This taco seasoning tastes so much better than the store bought package; my family even noticed. I make a large batch at a time because I use it in other recipes too. I highly recommend this recipe for taco seasoning.

Reading the nutritional info,it says there is 203 mg of sodium.Am I missing something? My chili powder doesn’t contain salt.
Sherri
I would go by what your bottles say. The nutritional information provided is for generic ingredients 🙂

I followed the recipe exactly, added 4 tablespoons to my meat because I did 2 pounds and it doesn’t taste anything like packet seasoning. It really didn’t seem to add any flavor to the meat whatsoever.
Kael
Probably because we are used to the high amount of salt that is added to store-bought packets. For a lot of people, salt means flavour…but it really doesn’t, it’s hard to get used to but eventually, you do.
Fran Ramos
Thanks for the recipe! I just made it and it tastes better than the packets!
Denise
Do you add any water when you add the seasoning to the meat mixture & seasoning? The packets you add a little bit of water.
Sherri
You can a couple of tablespoons if you’d like. I sometimes do but not always. 🙂
Debra
Made This just a bit ago and using it tonight for Tacos! Thanks

yeah!!!!! love this! So funny, I was at the grocery last night, picked up a packet of taco seasoning and looked at ingredients . . . and immediately put it back and thought, we can make our own (already make our own ranch dressing seasoning and au jus seasoning). Also, not sure where you are, but if you have a Penzey’s spice shop near you (or you can shop online) – best spices ever!!! and they never use cornstarch or other ingredients for “anti-clumping”. Thank you again for sharing this recipe. so excited to try and LOVE that there isn’t any salt in it.
